Abstract

Aśubhabhāvanā(Cotemplation on the Impure) is the earliest meditation in Buddhism. Buddha taught aśubhabhāvanā as way for reaching to nirvana, but many monks committed suicide because of disgust to uncleanness of human body experienced when they practiced aśubhabhāvanā. So Buddha gave up aśubhabhāvanā, and then taught new medtation, ānāpānasati. Despite the failure of aśubhabhāvanā in the earliest buddhism, this meditation had been succeeded to Abhidharma Buddhism and Mahāyāna Buddhism, and developed as 6 kinds of aśubhabhāvanā in the Yogācārabhūmi.

There are two styles of aśubhabhāvanā in early buddhist texts, one is called as outer body aśubhabhāvanā to meditate on outer and inner organs of human body, the other is called as inner body aśubhabhāvanā to meditate on the uncleanness of dead body. Outer body aśubhabhāvanā had been succeeded to Mahāyāna Buddhism, the other one to Abhidharma Buddhism.

Outer body aśubhabhāvanā and inner body aśubhabhāvanā are called as the decomposition and uncleanness aśubhabhāvanā in the Yogācārabhūmi, and there are different 5 kinds of aśubhabhāvanā techniques as like the anguish(苦惱) aśubhabhāvanā, the baseness(下劣) aśubhabhāvanā, the comparison(觀待) aśubhabhāvanā, the klesha(煩惱) śubhabhāvanā, and the fast decomposition(速壞) aśubhabhāvanā in the Yogācārabhūmi.

The decomposition and uncleanness aśubhabhāvanā is succeeded to the Yogācārabhūmi from outer and inner body aśubhabhāvanā in Early Buddhism, and the other five aśubhabhāvanā techniques as the transformations from the original aśubhabhāvanā in Early Buddhism had been developed considering the systematic side of the psychology of a person.
